Mission: Episode 1: A New Frontier

Lieutenant Commander Monoc Drurio stood in his cabin aboard the USS Vanguard looking at his reflection in the mirror. What was he doing here? A native of planet Mizar II, the Mizarians were well known throughout the galaxy for their belief in peaceful non-resistance over confrontation, a fact that had led his people to being conquered more than six times in three centuries. That had never sat well with Monoc and led him to question the status quo more than once, earning his family the scorn of several prominent families on Mizar. It was made worse when, in early adulthood, Monoc vandalized the Mizarian Monument to Surrender. Admitting his guilt, Monoc was given the option to be incarcerated or be sent to Starfleet, a punishment worse than death to his people. Realizing that his time would be better spent helping others, Monoc chose to join Starfleet and was enrolled in the Starfleet Academy Annex on Bolarus IX.

HIs career in Starfleet had been star bound from the very beginning, even leading to his receiving Starfleet's Cochrane Medal of Excellence during his tenure. Initially he had chosen to complete advanced training in starship operations to become a Starfleet Operations Officer; however, Starfleet chose to reassign him to scientific study. He'd had a meteoric rise and, in time, even rose to Executive Officer of the Starship Zheng He. Monoc caused an interstellar incident when he attempted to open fire on the Romulan Flagship after an incident during a relatively peaceful mission. He was court-martialed and sentenced to five years at the Jaros II Stockade. Rather than dismiss him, Starfleet chose to reactivate his commission and assign him to the USS Vanguard as Chief Science Officer.

Now he needed to start over, and he wasn't exactly sure that he wanted to. Checking the chronometer, Monoc left his cabin and decided to go report in to the Captain, having waited far too long.

Yoralig stood at the back of the bridge. Makan stood next to him as he ran a diagnostic on the console in front of him. The science console was throwing errors all over the place. "So much for Starfleet's latest and greatest." The Coridanite said with a scowl. "See what you can do, we need these consoles working before we launch."

"Aye Captain." Makan said as he sat back down and started punching in commands.

Yoralig moved back to his seat. Sitting down he picked up the PADD that was sitting on the arm. He heard the turbolift doors open. Glancing up, it was just another wave of crew coming to run some test on the bridge. He went back to reading.

The Mizarian Lieutenant Commander passed through the open turbolift doors and looked around the Bridge of the Starship Vanguard. While he'd served on several ships before, it was always a little exciting the first time that you set foot on a new Bridge. Tugging on his uniform tunic, the Science Officer walked toward the Captain's Chair.

Standing before the Captain, "Lieutenant Commander Monoc Drurio, reporting as ordered."

"Welcome aboard Commander. At ease." The captain said setting down the PADD and standing back to his feet. He looked at the Mizarian standing before him, a few inches shorter than himself. He came highly recommended from his previous COs and Starfleet. Yoralig wanted the best of the best here on his ship.

The new Science Officer nodded, "Thank you, Captain. Is there anything that I need to do to properly check in other than introduce myself to you? I know that all ships are different and all styles are different." They most definitely were. Every Captain in the fleet was different, and some were more into pomp and circumstance than others were. Monoc had been on the verge of his own command when he chose to act against the Romulans though and would never get to know what his own style would be. Instead of being a CO, or even still an XO, he was back to the basics. At least they didn't make him a crewman.

Gearev studied Monoc for a long moment, his violet eyes unblinking, weighing the man’s words and the weight that seemed to hang beneath them. Then, with the faintest tilt of his head, he answered in his gravel-edged tone.

“Introductions are enough for now. I’m not interested in pomp, Commander—I’m interested in results. Learn this ship. Learn its crew. Make yourself indispensable, and you’ll have done more to check in than any ritual or ceremony ever could. Every station you manage, every report you file, every crisis you keep from reaching me—that’s where you prove yourself.”

He leaned back slightly, one hand resting on the table as if to ground the words. “You’ll find my style simple. I don’t need perfection, but I won’t tolerate complacency. Show me that you’re here to serve the ship and not just the rank on your collar, and we’ll work just fine together.”

"I think that we will get along well, Captain, as I've never been focused on ranking up, just doing my duty to the best of my ability." He left out a few parts. Starfleet had been a punishment when he joined, but it had been more than he'd expected. He still regretted what had happened aboard the Zheng He, but at least he was on the path toward redemption. From the look of things he'd have to work to prove that.

Looking around the Bridge, "With your permission I would like to become familiar with my station and the Science team aboard the ship."

“Of course Commander.” The captain didn’t even offer to show him to the science station, he just did. Walking to the starboard side of the bridge he stopped and activated a console. The console lit up. At the top it said ‘Science One’. “Here you are Commander.”

The Mizarian nodded, "Thank you, Captain, for showing me to my station." He sat down at the workstation and quickly became acquainted, "I won't let you down, Sir."

Yoralig nodded his approval at the new Chief Science Officer. "I don't expect anything less." The Coridanite said. "I am sure you have preparations to do. I will leave you to it."

Monoc nodded and started reviewing the workstation, preparing for the mission that was ahead.

Yoralig returned to the center chair of the bridge. Another report waited for him, which he promptly opened and read. This journey was going to an interesting one. Lets hope the Tholians don't come knocking while they are doing their mission.
